True or false… in Tango

This is about dancing in general and if applicable to tango… yes or not?

I LOVE the movie “Dirty Dancing” and I have to confess it was the movie of my childhood, and watching it now I saw so many thing related to tango, and I want to share them. There are so many other things that are usually happening in the “normal world” but some of them not in the tangosphera, I couldn’t resist not to notice them. So, I will look to all the examples from the tanguero point of view, so let’s take it easier, with easy stuff:

1. Let’s watch this:

Question: You are in a milonga, dancing with your partner, do we talk during the dance?
Answer: NO!

Correct, “No” is the correct answer.

2. Now, let’s watch this one:

What’s wrong in this one?
I’ll say… never ever invite a lady to dance in this manner!!! The invitation is so… very, very wrong, and there is another thing: that she is looking other ways when dancing, not paying attention to him in the beginning; once she turn all her attention to him things are going better in their dancing.

3. Let’s try another one before going to heavy stuff:

Very, very wrong! After a wonderful dance he left her there, just in the middle of nowhere! This is so … Come on!!! How could he just leave her there??? Boys, do not ever leave her there, like he did!...

4. Let’s move on, to another one:

He said: “Steps are not enough, FEEEEEL the music”
Yes, yes, yes!!! This is soooo tanguero, sooo tanguero!

And another good thing in this example: you can work/practice things on your own, to get better and better! But steps only, without feeling, is nothing… look in the movie: once she is concentrating only on steps she is mad… but when she is feeling the music, she is moving gorgeously! ☺

And another one (bad one) don’t talk to anyone like you are “the God of Dancing” as .. nobody is. Don’t argue with your partner try to learn things in a nice way for both of you. And ladies, don’t accept ugly critics just from anyone… ☺

5. This one …

No comment. Just try to do the same thing when you are dancing. And remember not to count the bits… will distract you from feeling the bit!

6. Let’s move to heavy stuff:

Mh? Something new? Head up! Frame! …Sounds familiar?
Of course we are not seeing the tango frame in this movie, but yes, in tango there is a frame, as in all dances in general…

7. Let’s try thiiiiisssss one:

He says: ”The most important thing to remember is…. BALANCE!”
What do you think about this?... Huh? Is this applicable to tango, or is just a general rule of dancing… in general?

8. Now… watch this:

She is talking about: frame locked, toes, forgetting the steps, and the other lady is telling her to forget about the steps and to let him lead her! Sounds tanguero enough?

… and then she is checking again the position: don’t look to the feet, head up, eyes open, tension in the arms, frame locked… sounds familiar? And she is not going to dance tango in that movie!

9. And in the end but not the last:

What do you see in the movie above? I’ll say… invitation, balance, axes, frame, connection, empathy, improvisation, adornment, and over all: fun. What are we talking about then? So… where stops dancing and where begins tango?

Now, go home and enjoy the entire movie, it's a great movie, very well done, with very good music, about many things. Forget about tango or dancing. Just enjoy the movie! It's simply great!
